Yoga builds a surprising amount of strength, but a few areas—like the glutes, upper back and shoulders—can benefit from a little extra work. Resistance bands are a light, quiet and space-saving way to add it.
Why Bands Pair So Well With Yoga
- They strengthen the muscles that keep you stable in standing poses and arm balances.
- The resistance grows as the band stretches, so movements stay smooth and controlled.
- They roll up into a drawer or a mat bag.
Four Moves to Try
- Band pull-aparts: Hold the band at shoulder height and pull it apart, squeezing your shoulder blades. Great for posture after desk work.
- Glute bridges with a loop band: Place a loop just above your knees and press outward as you lift your hips.
- Side steps: With a loop around your ankles, take slow steps to the side to wake up the hips.
- Seated rows: Wrap the band around your feet and draw your elbows back.
Choosing the Right Resistance
Start lighter than you think. You should be able to do 12–15 slow, controlled reps with good form. Many sets come with several strengths so you can progress over time.
How to Fit It In
Add five minutes of band work before your flow two or three times a week. You'll likely notice steadier warrior poses and stronger chaturangas within a few weeks.
